Mentality For Long-Term Success
Manny was asked how it felt to be on fire at the plate and I loved his answer:
“I’m just going ride this wave as long as I can.”
Manny Machado, San Diego Padres
He wasn’t saying it was a fluke like there wouldn’t be more waves… he was just insinuating that he understands that the good & full-of-fire moments come and go. And that the professional thing to do is to fully appreciate it while it’s here… in humility knowing that there will also be days that don’t look just like it.
Manny’s answer is an amazing example of flow and acceptance. Of perspective. And cadence.
He doesn’t have a death grip on the success— but he appreciates it.
And even when he has it— he still knows the season is long and puts his head down and keeps working.
Kind of an art, you know? To be able to appreciate the now but also hold space for the future. To enjoy riding a wave while simultaneously accepting that there will be still-waters moments and also more waves to come.
Would any part of this mentality serve you right now? The acceptance and perspective?
Can you own your strengths but continue to improve? Can you place your identity in a timeline bigger than your immediate results? Or shoot— can you ride the hell out of your current wave?!
